Homemade Chili Seasoning

So, I have this weird quirk where I feel challenged by grocery items if I cannot make them myself. I don't want to make them all the time, I just like to know that I can. (I'm weird, I know lol) So, while shopping for the week, I was getting items for chili. I had noticed the last time I made chili that there was a fair amount of sodium coming from the seasoning packet and I thought surely that I could make my own seasoning mix and it could be a bit healthier, as well as save some $$$, while I was at it. Therefore, here we are with a recipe to make your own chili seasoning! This recipe seriously cost me like .21¢ to make. That is waaaaay cheaper than a $1-2 packet, that only yields one making of chili, and this recipe can make 3-5!

Gather your spices and let's get to it!

Recipe:
2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
2 Tablespoons Cumin
2 Tablespoons Paprika
1 Teaspoon Oregano
1 1/2 Teaspoons Garlic Powder
! 1/2 Teaspoons Onion Powder
1 Tablespoon Black Pepper

Instructions:
Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well!

Next, store in an airtight container. Add 2-2 1/2 tablespoons to your chili! Or more if you just wanna...
I got this cute little container at IKEA for like $1.99.

You can also add some cayenne pepper if you wish for a little more heat. The hubby does not like spicy foods, so I did not add any. About 1 1/2 teaspoons would be a good amount to add!

I was checking the label on a McCormick pack of chili seasoning. There are about 5 tablespoons of seasoning in one packet. Often times, the packets have unnecessary fillers like anti-caking agents and artificial flavors. ALSO, the chili packets contain 350 mg (15%) of sodium per one 1 1/3 TBSP of seasoning and there are 4 servings in each packet. That is literally insane. 1,400 mg of sodium coming from one packet. Not to mention, there will be added sodium from meat, beans, and tomatoes that are added in the chili as well. If my calculations are correct on this, 2 tablespoons of the homemade mix contains 48 mg (2%) of sodium. No extra fillers or artificial flavors. I think that is a winner winner chicken dinner right there. Also, in my opinion, the chili flavors are more vibrant and there are many ways you can use this seasoning other than just for a big ole pot of chili!

If you make your own seasoning, let me know how it goes!

If you need an easy chili recipe, this is how I make mine~

3 cans of diced tomatoes ( the hubs and I think the more tomatoes, the better)
1 can of red kidney beans
1 can of black beans (I do not drain them)
1 lb of meat (I prefer to use turkey meat)
1 diced onion
bomb.com homemade chili seasoning ^^^^
lil bit of salt

-You can slow cook this recipe, cook it on the stove, or make it in an instant pot (my newest obsession)
Enjoy! xoxo

  1. I'm going to use this recipe for my chili seasoning from now on. I love chili but I can't tolerate the high sodium levels in the seasoning. Thanks, Kelsey!!
